QuestionHow do I quickly simulate ballistic missile attacks in STK?
Answer
STK allows you to quickly simulate ballistic missile attacks.  Below are the steps to create a threat from North Korea to Guam, along with a notional aircraft tracking the missile.
 

Create the scenario:

  1. Launch STK.
  2. Create a new scenario with the following properties:
    Scenario Properties
    OptionValue
    NameNK_Guam
    Start Time21:00:00 (5:30 AM North Korea Local Time)
    Stop Time+ 1 hr
  3. Click OK.

Create the missile

  1. Select the Insert STK Objects ( User-added image) tool.
  2. Select Missile (User-added image), then select Define Properties (User-added image).
  3. Set the following Launch Latitude and Longitude.

  4. Set the following Impact Latitude and Longitude.

    Latitude13.42 deg
    Longitude144.74 deg
  5. Set the Fixed Delta V to zero (0) km/sec (STK will automatically calculate the minimum Delta V).
  6. Click OK

Insert Guan and Kusong

  1. Use the Search Bar to insert Guam.
  2. Use the Search Bar to insert Kusong.

Create the aircraft:

  1. Select the Insert STK Objects (User-added image) menu.
  2. From the Scenario Objects list select Aircraft (User-added image), then select  Define Properties (User-added image).
  3. Set the following for the aircraft waypoints, leave the non-specific values as the default.

  1. In the 3D Graphics – Model page, change the Model File to “rq-4a_globalhawk.mdl”
  2. Click OK to save your changes

Calculate Line of Sight Intervals and Geometry:

  1. Right-Click on the Aircraft (User-added image) and select Access (User-added image).
  2. Select Missile (User-added image) and click Compute.
    1. Access intervals should be displayed on your timeline view below
  3. Under Reports, click Access to view the tracking intervals
  4. Under Graphs, click AER… to view the tracking geometry
Visualize the Scenario:
  1. Click Play (User-added image) to start animating the simulation.
  2. Click Reset (User-added image) to go back to the beginning
  3. Right-click on your Aircraft (User-added image), and select Zoom To
  4. Click Play (User-added image) to start animating the simulation.

Adding Fidelity to the scenario:

For those that need to go even deeper, leverage STK’s add-on modules to add to this scenario:
  • Use STK Pro to model advanced sensors
  • Use STK EOIR to model the EOIR performance of your sensors
  • Use STK Radar to look at PDet / SNR based on aspect dependent radar cross section
  • Use STK Missile Tool Kit to generate higher fidelity missile fly-outs and analyze interceptors
